Hundreds of terrorists and other criminals are on the loose after a prison break occurred at the high-security Koutoukalé prison in the Republic of Niger on Thursday, July 11, 2024.
According to security expert Zagazola Makama, the jailbreak, which led to the freedom of hundreds of terrorists, criminals, and drug traffickers, occurred after the inmates gained control of the facilities around 12pm.
“The prison, located near the capital city of Niamey, was the scene of a violent mutiny that overwhelmed guards and allowed inmates to escape with weapons and vehicles,” Makama posted on X.
“According to eyewitnesses, gunshots and explosions were heard inside the prison around midday, prompting a quick response from security forces. However, the inmates had already gained control of the prison, breaking through armoured gates, barbed wire, and trenches.”

Makama said the latest escape has raised serious doubts about the security of the prison, which had previously thwarted two jihadist attempts to free their comrades.
According to the security expert, an investigation is underway to determine how the inmates were able to procure weapons and overpower the guards stationed at the prison.
Makama said the Interior Ministry of Niger Republic has issued a radio message to all governors, confirming the escape and urging village chiefs and religious leaders to report any suspicious individuals.
He added that the government has declared a curfew in the Tillabéri region, with the entire River Niger region also on high alert.
“The escape is considered a major security breach, and authorities are working to recapture the fleeing inmates,” Makama stated.
“The public has been warned to be vigilant and report any information that could aid in the recapture of the escaped prisoners.”
